The textured PEI plate

Grips without glue, releases when cool, and forgives an imperfect first layer. The right default for nearly everything you print.

Why textured PEI is the default

Three properties, and the third is the one that matters most and gets discussed least:

  • It grips without glue. No glue stick, no hairspray, no tape.
  • It releases when cool. Let the plate cool and most parts pop off without a tool, which means no scraping and no gouging.
  • It is forgiving. The texture hides first-layer imperfections, so a slightly wrong Z offset is cosmetic rather than fatal. On smooth PEI the same offset fails the print.

What the 0.5 mm steel base is doing

Stiffness, and it is more important than it sounds. A thin flexible sheet lifts at the corners when the bed is hot and the print is contracting — the plate itself becomes part of the warping problem.

A 0.5 mm stainless base with enhanced magnetic adhesion stays flat, which is specifically cited as helping with large models in materials prone to warping. If you print big flat parts in ABS, PC or nylon, the base matters as much as the surface.

How to clean it, because this is the whole maintenance story

Dish soap and hot water. That is it. Wash the plate in the sink, rinse, dry with a clean cloth, and handle it by the edges afterwards.

Not isopropyl alcohol as the primary method. Alcohol dissolves oils and then, as it evaporates, redeposits them in a thinner film across the surface. It can make a contaminated plate worse. Alcohol is fine for removing a specific spot of residue; soap and water is what restores a whole plate.

Never with an abrasive pad or a metal scraper. PEI is a coating, and scratching it removes the surface permanently.

The practical rule: if adhesion has dropped, wash it before concluding anything. That one step resolves most lost-adhesion complaints. Adhesion troubleshooting.

What it is wrong for

Prints with a visible bottom face

The texture transfers. That is a feature on a functional part and a flaw on a display piece. For those, smooth PEI or a dual-texture plate — textured vs smooth.

TPU

Flexible filament can grip textured PEI hard enough that removing the part tears the surface. That is permanent damage to a consumable, and it is avoidable: print TPU on a smooth plate.

How long one lasts, honestly

No cycle count, because measuring that needs a rig this site does not have. What is true qualitatively: PEI is a consumable, skin oils shorten its life faster than printing does, and scraping ends it quickly.

The practical signal is a plate that no longer holds prints after a proper soap-and-water wash. At that point the surface is worn and replacement is the answer rather than more cleaning. Plate options.

Where to go next

The plate roundup for what to buy as a second plate, adhesion troubleshooting if something is failing now, and warping diagnosis if corners are lifting specifically.

1. The default plate

Bambu Lab Textured PEI Plate

Powder-coated texture on a 0.5 mm steel base - grip, release and forgiveness in one surface.

A powder-coating process creates the rugged texture, on a 0.5 mm stainless steel base with enhanced magnetic adhesion, cited as resisting warping on large models in ABS, PC and nylon.

The reason it is the default is forgiveness rather than peak grip. Textured PEI hides first-layer imperfection, which means a slightly imperfect Z offset gives you a cosmetic flaw instead of a failed print. That converts more prints than extra adhesion would.

What it gets right

  • Powder-coated texture grips hard without glue stick and releases when cool, which is the whole job
  • The 0.5 mm steel base is stiff enough that it does not lift at the corners under a hot bed
  • Hides first-layer imperfections, so a slightly off Z offset is forgiving rather than a failure

What it does not

  • The texture transfers to your first layer — wrong plate for anything whose bottom face is a show surface
  • PEI surfaces are consumable; skin oils and over-aggressive scraping both shorten their life
  • TPU can grip hard enough on textured PEI to tear the surface on removal

2. The spare to buy

BIQU PyroGrip Textured PEI Plate

Same surface, same mounting, cited at roughly half the price - which is what makes two plates reasonable.

Textured PEI at a cited price point of roughly half the official plate, on the same mounting system with no modification required.

The argument for buying it is not performance, it is quantity. Two plates means a contaminated or gouged surface costs you a swap instead of your evening.

What it gets right

  • Same surface technology and mounting as the official plate at a much lower price point
  • Makes keeping two or three plates on the shelf a reasonable decision rather than an expensive one
  • No adapter, no modification — it drops onto the magnetic bed you already have

What it does not

  • PEI thickness and coating consistency vary more between third-party plates than within one brand's official line
  • Expect to re-tune Z offset when you swap brands mid-queue
  • Not a performance upgrade over the official plate — a price one

Questions people actually ask

How do I clean a textured PEI plate?

Dish soap and hot water, then dry with a clean cloth and handle it by the edges. Avoid isopropyl alcohol as the main method - it dissolves skin oils and redeposits them as a thin film as it evaporates, which can leave the plate worse. Never use an abrasive pad or a metal scraper.

Why is textured PEI better than smooth?

Mostly because it is forgiving. The texture hides first-layer imperfections, so a slightly imperfect Z offset gives you a cosmetic flaw rather than a failed print. It also grips without glue and releases when cool. Smooth PEI gives a glossy bottom face and demands a more precise setup.

Can I print TPU on a textured PEI plate?

You can, and it is a bad idea. TPU can grip textured PEI hard enough that removing the part tears the surface, which permanently damages a consumable. Use a smooth plate for flexible filament.

How long does a textured PEI plate last?

No honest number - it depends on handling far more than on print count, and we have measured none. The practical signal is a plate that no longer holds prints even after a proper soap-and-water wash. At that point the surface is worn and it needs replacing.

Does the steel base thickness matter?

Yes. A 0.5 mm stainless base is stiff enough to stay flat when the bed is hot and a large part is contracting; thinner sheets can lift at the corners and become part of the warping problem. It is specifically cited as helping with large models in ABS, PC and nylon.
