The short answer
Buy one textured PEI plate and use it for everything. It is forgiving, it grips without glue, and it releases when cool.
Then buy a second plate, not a better one. This is the actual upgrade. A contaminated or gouged plate stops the queue; a spare turns that into a 30-second swap. A cheaper third-party textured plate is the sensible second.
Add a smooth surface only if your prints have visible bottom faces. A dual-texture plate gets both on one sheet.
Before buying anything: wash the plate you own with dish soap and hot water. Contamination, not wear, is the usual cause of lost adhesion.
How this page is ranked
- Is it forgiving? A plate that tolerates a slightly imperfect Z offset prevents more failed prints than a plate with marginally better adhesion.
- Does the surface suit the print? Texture is a finish decision, not a quality one, and it transfers to every bottom face.
- Does it make owning two plates affordable? Weighted deliberately, because this is what keeps a machine printing.
- Who is it wrong for? On every entry.
Textured versus smooth, decided in one question
Will anyone see the bottom of the print? If no, textured, every time. If yes, smooth for that print.
| Surface | Gives you | Costs you |
|---|---|---|
| Textured PEI | Strong grip without glue, forgiving Z offset, hides first-layer flaws | Texture transfers to the bottom face; TPU can grip hard enough to tear it |
| Smooth PEI | Glossy bottom face, sharp edges on the first layer | Unforgiving about Z offset and cleanliness; shows every flaw |
| Patterned | A decorative bottom face with no post-processing | The pattern appears whether you wanted it or not |
Full comparison: textured PEI vs smooth.
Plates are consumables, and that changes how you should buy
PEI wears out. The three things that end a plate's life, in order:
- Skin oils. The main cause of lost adhesion, and reversible — wash with dish soap and hot water, not isopropyl alcohol, which smears oil around rather than removing it.
- Scraping. Metal tools gouge PEI. Let parts cool and they release themselves; if you must intervene, use plastic.
- TPU. Flexible filament can grip textured PEI hard enough to tear the surface on removal. Use a smooth plate for TPU.
Because they are consumables, two cheap plates beat one expensive one. Adhesion troubleshooting.
On third-party plates
They are fine, and the mounting is usually identical, which is what makes them worth buying as spares. The genuine catch is consistency: PEI thickness and coating vary more between brands than within one brand's line, so swapping plates mid-queue means re-checking Z offset rather than assuming.
Keep that in mind as a workflow cost, not a quality warning. A slightly different plate with a correct Z offset prints identically.

1. Best build plate
Bambu Lab Textured PEI Plate
The right default for almost everything, and the plate to replace first when adhesion goes.
Powder-coated textured PEI on a 0.5 mm stainless steel base, cited as resisting warping on large models in ABS, PC and nylon. It grips hard without glue stick and releases when cool, which is the entire job of a build plate.
The under-appreciated benefit is forgiveness. Textured PEI hides first-layer imperfections, so a slightly imperfect Z offset becomes a cosmetic issue rather than a failed print. On a smooth plate the same offset fails.
The 0.5 mm steel base matters too: it is stiff enough not to lift at the corners when the bed is hot, which thinner sheets do.
What it gets right
- Powder-coated texture grips hard without glue stick and releases when cool, which is the whole job
- The 0.5 mm steel base is stiff enough that it does not lift at the corners under a hot bed
- Hides first-layer imperfections, so a slightly off Z offset is forgiving rather than a failure
What it does not
- The texture transfers to your first layer — wrong plate for anything whose bottom face is a show surface
- PEI surfaces are consumable; skin oils and over-aggressive scraping both shorten their life
- TPU can grip hard enough on textured PEI to tear the surface on removal
| Surface | Powder-coated textured PEI |
|---|---|
| Base | 0.5 mm stainless steel with enhanced magnetic adhesion |
| Stated strength | Resists warping on large models in ABS, PC and nylon |

2. Best second plate
BIQU PyroGrip Textured PEI Plate
Textured PEI at roughly half the official price, on the same mounting system.
Same surface technology and the same mounting as the official plate, cited at roughly half the price. That changes the calculation on keeping two or three plates, which is what actually keeps a machine printing.
Here is why a second plate is the real upgrade. A contaminated or gouged plate stops everything until you clean or replace it. With a spare, a failed first layer costs you a plate swap instead of your evening.
Expect to re-check Z offset when swapping brands mid-queue — PEI thickness and coating consistency vary more between manufacturers than within one line.
What it gets right
- Same surface technology and mounting as the official plate at a much lower price point
- Makes keeping two or three plates on the shelf a reasonable decision rather than an expensive one
- No adapter, no modification — it drops onto the magnetic bed you already have
What it does not
- PEI thickness and coating consistency vary more between third-party plates than within one brand's official line
- Expect to re-tune Z offset when you swap brands mid-queue
- Not a performance upgrade over the official plate — a price one
| Surface | Textured PEI |
|---|---|
| Mounting | Same mounting system as the official plate |
| Price positioning (cited) | Roughly half the official plate |

3. Best if some prints need a smooth face
Bambu Lab Dual-Texture PEI Build Plate
Two surfaces on one sheet, so you flip it rather than buying and storing a second plate.
Textured PEI on one side, smooth PEI on the other, on a 0.5 mm magnetic stainless backing with enhanced magnetic adhesion. The smooth side produces a glossy bottom face that textured PEI simply cannot.
Sensible if you alternate between functional parts and display pieces. One plate, two finishes, one storage slot.
Two honest costs: smooth PEI is far less forgiving about Z offset and cleanliness, and flipping means twice the handling — which is twice the opportunity to put skin oils on the surface, the thing that kills PEI adhesion.
What it gets right
- Two surfaces on one plate — flip it rather than buy and store a second
- The smooth side gives a glossy bottom face that textured PEI cannot produce
- Same 0.5 mm steel backing and magnetic grip as the single-sided plate
What it does not
- Smooth PEI is much less forgiving about Z offset and bed cleanliness than textured
- Flipping means twice the handling, and fingerprints are what kills PEI adhesion
- If 95% of your prints are functional, the textured-only plate is the cheaper right answer
| Surfaces | Textured PEI one side, smooth PEI the other |
|---|---|
| Base | 0.5 mm magnetic stainless steel backing |
| Stated benefit | Enhanced magnetic adhesion, resists warping |

4. Best wide-fitment spare
BIQU Panda Double-CryoGrip Buildplate
A textured coated steel sheet at 257 x 257 mm that fits five different Bambu machines.
A textured coated steel sheet at 257 x 257 mm, fitting the P1P, P1S, P2S, X1C and A1. That breadth is the interesting part — it survives your next printer, which most accessories do not.
Coated steel is not PEI, so adhesion behavior differs by material. Expect a learning print or two rather than a drop-in replacement.
Nothing here is an upgrade over a healthy official plate. It is a spare, and a spare is the thing worth having.
What it gets right
- Fits five different Bambu models, so it survives your next printer
- Priced to be the second plate, which is what actually keeps a machine printing
- Textured coating releases cooled parts cleanly without a scraper
What it does not
- A third-party surface means re-doing your Z offset and probably your first-layer flow
- Coated steel is not PEI — adhesion behavior differs by material, so expect a learning print or two
- Nothing here is an upgrade over a healthy official plate; it is a spare
| Surface | Textured coated steel sheet |
|---|---|
| Size | 257 x 257 mm |
| Fits | Bambu Lab P1P, P1S, P2S, X1C and A1 |

5. Best for a patterned bottom face
BIQU Panda BuildPlate Designer Series
Honeycomb and houndstooth textures, for a finish you cannot get any other way.
A dual-textured plate with honeycomb and houndstooth patterns, fitting the X1, P1 and A1 series. For a decorative part, a patterned bottom face is a finish that would otherwise require post-processing.
Two patterns on one plate makes it two finishes for one purchase, which is the sensible version of this idea.
Keep a plain textured plate as your default. This is for the prints where the bottom face is part of the design.
What it gets right
- A patterned bottom face is a finish you cannot get any other way without post-processing
- Two patterns on one plate, so it is two finishes for one purchase
- Fits across the X1, P1 and A1 lines
What it does not
- A decorative plate is the wrong default — you want a plain textured plate for everything functional
- The pattern will show on every single print you run on that side, whether you wanted it or not
- Third-party surface, so expect to re-tune Z offset
| Type | Dual-textured build plate |
|---|---|
| Patterns | Honeycomb and houndstooth |
| Fits | Bambu X1, P1 and A1 printers |
Questions people actually ask
Which build plate should I buy for a Bambu Lab printer?
One textured PEI plate as your default - it grips without glue, releases when cool and is forgiving about Z offset. Then buy a second plate rather than a better one, because a contaminated or gouged plate otherwise stops the queue until you deal with it.
Is a dual-texture plate worth it?
If some of your prints have a visible bottom face, yes - you get a glossy smooth surface and a textured one on a single sheet. If all your prints are functional, the textured-only plate is cheaper and you would never flip it.
Are third-party build plates as good as official ones?
Generally yes, and the mounting is usually identical, which makes them good value as spares. The practical catch is that PEI thickness and coating consistency vary more between brands than within one brand's line, so re-check your Z offset when you swap plates mid-queue.
Why has my build plate stopped sticking?
Skin oils, almost always. Wash it with dish soap and hot water - isopropyl alcohol tends to spread oil around rather than lift it off. If a proper wash does not restore adhesion, the PEI surface is worn and the plate needs replacing. Plates are consumables.
Which plate should I use for TPU?
A smooth one. TPU can grip textured PEI hard enough to tear the surface when you remove the part, which damages a consumable you would rather keep. A smooth plate releases flexible parts more kindly.
