The three best fixes at this price are free
- Wash the build plate with dish soap and hot water. Skin oils are the leading cause of adhesion failures, and alcohol spreads them around rather than removing them. This single action resolves most "my prints will not stick" complaints.
- Clean and re-grease the linear rails. Dry rails are noisy and they wear. A machine that has got louder over a year usually needs this.
- Clean the extruder gears. Debris packed into the teeth reduces grip and causes under-extrusion. A brass brush and a pick.
Do all three before spending anything. They cost an hour and they outperform most parts on this page.
How this page is ranked
By how much the part changes per dollar, with free actions listed first because they win on that metric outright. The criteria otherwise:
- Does it fix a symptom you have? Cheap does not make an unnecessary part worth buying.
- Is it a consumable or a one-off? Plates and hotends are consumables and buying spares early is sensible.
- Does it fit your machine? Fitment is model-specific throughout.
- Who is it wrong for? On every entry.
Where cheap parts genuinely beat expensive ones
Consumables you will need anyway
Plates, hotends, nozzle cleaning needles, silicone socks, rail grease, desiccant. Every one of these gets used eventually. Buying them before you need them converts future downtime into present spending, which is the right trade.
Diagnostic tools
A cheap hygrometer tells you whether your filament storage is working. An independent oven thermometer makes oven drying safe. A set of feeler gauges helps with first-layer checks. Each is a small amount of money that converts guesswork into information.
Parts that change geometry
A cooling duct changes where air goes, which is something no setting replicates. That is why a cheap duct can outperform an expensive accessory that only changes convenience.
Where cheap is a false economy
| Item | Why cheap hurts |
|---|---|
| Nozzles for abrasive filament | A cheap stainless nozzle is destroyed by filled filament. Hardened is the requirement, not the premium. |
| Enclosure materials | Non-flame-retardant foam or fabric around a machine heating plastic unattended is the wrong place to save. |
| Structural printed parts in PLA | They sag in a warm chamber. Print in PETG or better, or buy the part. |
| Power supplies and electrical parts | Not a category to improvise in, and not covered on this site. |
| Build plates with unknown coatings | A plate that will not hold a first layer is not cheap at any price. |
The printed-for-free category
Spool holders, tool racks, cable guides, filament guides, scraper holders, thermometer mounts, drawer organizers. All of them free, all of them organizational. The one rule: structural or heat-exposed parts need PETG or better, because PLA in a warm chamber sags. Printed vs bought.

1. Best cheap upgrade
BIQU Panda Door PC Upgrade Panel
Polycarbonate replacing acrylic on the part of a P1S that degrades fastest.
The P1S door hazes and scratches faster than any other component, and a polycarbonate panel tolerates chamber heat better than the acrylic it replaces.
Cheap, visibly better, and completely honest: it changes what the machine looks like and how long the panel stays clear, not what it can print.
What it gets right
- Polycarbonate tolerates chamber heat better than the acrylic it replaces, which matters if you run ABS
- Fixes the one cosmetic part of a P1S that gets ruined fastest
- A genuinely cheap upgrade with a visible result
What it does not
- This is a door, not a chamber heater — it changes nothing about what you can print
- Pure quality-of-life on a machine that already works
- P1 and X1 series only
| Material | Polycarbonate |
|---|---|
| Fits | Bambu Lab P1 and X1 series |
| Stated benefit | Improved visibility and enclosure protection |

2. Best cheap print-quality fix
BIQU Panda Jet Cooling Fan Duct
Omni-directional airflow in MJF nylon, for overhangs slicer settings cannot rescue.
Among the cheapest parts that genuinely changes output. Directing air all the way around the nozzle is a geometry change, which is something slicer settings cannot replicate.
MJF nylon rather than printed PLA, which matters in a warm chamber. Fits Bambu X1/P1 hotends and the Panda Revo series.
Re-test overhangs after fitting, and turn it down for ABS.
What it gets right
- Directing air all the way around the nozzle is a real geometry fix for curling overhangs
- MJF nylon tolerates chamber heat far better than a printed PLA duct would
- Cheap, and it addresses a fault that slicer settings alone often cannot
What it does not
- More cooling on ABS and ASA causes layer splitting — this helps PLA and PETG, and can hurt the others
- Changing airflow invalidates your tuned profiles; re-test overhangs after fitting
- X1/P1 and Panda Revo fitment only
| Type | Omni-directional cooling duct |
|---|---|
| Material | MJF nylon |
| Fits | Bambu Lab X1/P1 hotends and the Panda Revo series |
| Targets | Nozzle-area airflow, bridges, overhangs |

3. Best cheap repair
BIQU Panda Claw Extruder Gear Set
Hardened coated gears, for under-extrusion people replace entire printers over.
Worn or debris-packed extruder gears cause progressive under-extrusion that imitates a partial clog, a bad flow calibration and wet filament all at once.
Golden nano-coated hardened steel gears for the X1, P1 and A1 series, with stated support for PLA, PETG, TPU and ABS. The improved grip matters most with TPU.
Clean before replacing. A brass brush and a pick cost almost nothing and resolve a surprising number of these.
What it gets right
- Extruder gears are a wear item, and a worn set causes under-extrusion that looks like six other faults
- Hardened and coated gears grip TPU better than the stock set, which is the common TPU-slipping complaint
- Fits X1, P1 and A1 — one part number for most of the lineup
What it does not
- This is a repair for a real symptom, not an upgrade to buy preemptively
- An extruder teardown is the most intimidating job on the machine for a first-timer
- If your gears are not worn, new gears will change nothing
| Material | Golden nano-coated hardened steel gears |
|---|---|
| Fits | Bambu X1, P1 and A1 series |
| Materials supported | PLA, PETG, TPU, ABS |
| Stated benefit | Improved grip, fewer jams |

4. Best cheap way to own two plates
BIQU PyroGrip Textured PEI Plate
Textured PEI at roughly half the official price, on the same mounting.
The second plate is the upgrade most people need, and the cost of the official one is what stops them. Cited at roughly half the price, with the same surface technology and mounting.
Owning two plates means a failed first layer costs you a swap rather than an evening.
What it gets right
- Same surface technology and mounting as the official plate at a much lower price point
- Makes keeping two or three plates on the shelf a reasonable decision rather than an expensive one
- No adapter, no modification — it drops onto the magnetic bed you already have
What it does not
- PEI thickness and coating consistency vary more between third-party plates than within one brand's official line
- Expect to re-tune Z offset when you swap brands mid-queue
- Not a performance upgrade over the official plate — a price one
| Surface | Textured PEI |
|---|---|
| Mounting | Same mounting system as the official plate |
| Price positioning (cited) | Roughly half the official plate |

5. Best cheap purchase that fixes the most
SUNLU FilaDryer S2
A cited 35-70 C range, which rules moisture in or out as a cause for good.
At the top of the cheap range rather than the bottom, and it earns the place. Moisture imitates half a dozen other faults convincingly, so eliminating it is worth more than any single part on this page.
A cited 35-70 C range covers PLA, PETG and TPU, and it is noted as quiet enough to run overnight. A handful of rescued spools pays for it.
What it gets right
- 35-70 C covers PLA, PETG and TPU, which is most of what actually goes wet in a hobby workshop
- Quiet enough to run overnight in a room you sleep in
- The cheapest entry point that is still a real dryer rather than a warm box
What it does not
- 70 C ceiling means nylon, PC and PA-CF are out of range
- One spool at a time, which does not fit a four-color job
- No printing from the unit, so a dried spool starts re-absorbing the moment it comes out
| Temperature range (cited) | 35-70 C |
|---|---|
| Capacity | One spool |
| Diameters | Supports all common filament diameters |
| Noted | Quiet enough for overnight drying |
Questions people actually ask
What are the best cheap 3D printer upgrades?
The best three cost nothing: wash the build plate with dish soap and hot water, clean and re-grease the linear rails, and clean the extruder gears. After that, a cooling duct for overhangs, a second build plate, and a cheap filament dryer are the parts with the best change-per-dollar.
What is the cheapest upgrade that improves print quality?
A cooling duct, if curling overhangs are your problem - it changes where air goes, which no slicer setting replicates. If prints are failing rather than merely imperfect, washing the plate costs nothing and fixes more.
Is a cheap filament dryer worth it?
Yes, if you print PETG, TPU or anything filled. Moisture imitates half a dozen other faults convincingly, so eliminating it as a variable is worth more than most individual parts. A handful of rescued spools pays for a cheap unit outright.
What should I not buy cheap for a 3D printer?
Nozzles for abrasive filament, where hardened steel is a requirement rather than a premium. Enclosure materials, where flame retardancy matters around an unattended machine. Structural printed parts in PLA, which sag in a warm chamber. And build plates with unknown coatings, which are not cheap if they will not hold a first layer.
Which upgrades can I print for free?
Organizational ones: spool holders, tool racks, cable guides, filament guides, scraper holders, thermometer mounts. Print structural or heat-exposed parts in PETG or better rather than PLA, because PLA inside a warm chamber will eventually sag.
